Teen Choice Winners

From Yahoo! - August 13th, 2001

*NSYNC, Jennifer Lopez, and Britney Spears were among the winners at the Teen Choice Awards 2001 on Sunday (August 12). *NSYNC (news - web sites) earned the most awards, which are doled out in the form of a full-size surfboard. The group was honored for its single "Pop," its new album for Celebrity, and for its concert tour. In addition, *NSYNC singer Justin Timberlake won the male hottie award for the second year in a row.

After Spears was named favorite female artist, she told the audience at the Universal Amphitheater in California, "Thank you so much for doing this for me. It's just such an honor being voted by all my peers." Lopez took home the choice female hottie award, and she grabbed the dance track award for her hit single "Play."

Male artist winner Aaron Carter and his brother Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys (news - web sites) performed together. R&B singer Usher, rapper Lil' Bow Wow, Eve, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, and female pop group Dream were also among the evening's featured performers. One of the more unusual events of the ceremony was heavy-set parody group Moulin Huge's take on the popular "Lady Marmalade" music video, which features Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, and Pink.

Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar was honored with her first extraordinary achievement award, which was presented to her by her Buffy The Vampire Slayer co-star Michelle Trachtenberg.

Actor Ben Affleck (Pearl Harbor) also made a surprise appearance at the awards show. The actor, who turns 29 tomorrow (August 15), picked up two trophies, including best actor, and told the audience, "I actually wasn't going to be here. I felt like it was important because this actually means a lot to me because it's voted on by you guys." It was Affleck's first public appearance since checking himself into an alcohol-abuse treatment center earlier this month.

Other stars attending the Teen Choice Awards included Sandra Bullock, Jessica Alba, Freddie Prinze Jr., Pamela Anderson, David Spade, Adam Sandler, and David Boreanaz, among others.

The Teen Choice Awards allow teenagers across the U.S. to celebrate the hottest icons in film, television, music, fashion, and sports. The awards show will air from 8 to 10 p.m. ET August 20 on Fox.
